Art & Design

At Rockbeare Primary, we nurture creativity, encourage exploration of various artistic techniques, foster expression and celebrate individuality'.

Through our art curriculum, we aim to ignite curiosity and develop skills that empower each child's unique artistic voice.

'Every human is an artist'

Don Miguel Ruiz

Our art Principles based on our school values.

Through art, our children show:

Creativity and imagination.  Children learn to express themselves through various mediums, fostering original ideas and innovative thinking.

Appreciation of art in different forms from paintings and sculptures to music and dance.  They develop a deeper understanding of cultural heritage and artistic diversity.

Reflection, children explore emotions, experiences and personal narratives through creative work.

Expression: Art provides a platform for pupils to express their feelings, thoughts and perspectives.  It allows them to communicate beyond words.

An art curriculum goes beyond techniques- it nurtures holistic growth and enriches pupils' lives.

Our Intent:
At Rockbeare we believe that every child should have the opportunity to experience a creative, imaginative and inventive art curriculum. Through art lessons and wider school opportunities, children will gain the skills, concepts and the knowledge they need to express their ideas and respond to their experiences. Pupils will be enabled and encouraged to use and manipulate; colour, texture, form, pattern and a variety of different materials to create their own independent art, craft and design. Throughout a child’s time at Rockbeare they will gain skills in drawing, painting and sculpture. The curriculum is designed to introduce basic skills which are built upon. Skills are revisited annually and the use of an ongoing sketchbook underpins this process. Children will gain an understanding of a range of artists from different cultures, genders, historical periods and the modern day.  Children can create pieces of art in the style of these artists.   Children will be able to recognise the similarities and differences within and across pieces of art and artistic styles and children will develop their own artistic style.

We explicitly teach the full range of art skills and use the art progression of skills to adapt learning for pupils to ensure they make progress within each skill. We use these symbols and share each skill so children can understand what skills are needed to work independently as an artist.  (See art progression of skills document).

Our Art Skills

Implementation

Art is taught in blocks across the year, so that children achieve depth in their learning. For each topic there are key performance indicators to ensure children are learning the key knowledge from the unit studied. Children are also exposed to a range of artistic skills, mediums, tools and techniques which are tracked and progressive. By the end of Year 6 children will have explored their ideas and recorded their experiences.  They will be proficient in drawing and painting and will have developed their observational and expressive skills. They will have a greater understanding of composition, colour, form and texture and understand how artists convey their work. They will have engaged in sculpture, print making and digital art and can evaluate their own and others’ work. Impact

Children leave each year with the knowledge and skills required to enable them to access and apply to subsequent learning.  Children will be aware of different artists and artwork from a range of cultures and historical periods.  Children will be able to make connections to previous learning and understand the relevance of these connections. Children will be assessed against the key performance indicators and the progression of skills document along with being provided opportunities to apply their learning and skills in end of unit projects.
